DEDUCTIVE LOGIC

Note Description

It is about deductive logic and the application of mathematical or symbolic techniques to logic (it can thus be seen as a branch of applied maths) There are many formal systems of logic. In this course we’ll be discussing two: Sentential Logic and Predicate Logic. (I shall hint at other systems in passing.) Sentential Logic is a part of Predicate Logic. So we’ll move from a simple system to a bigger and better system. The move is, in fact, momentous: it corresponds to the movement from Aristotelian logic to modern logic. So it involves a logical discovery which took two thousand years to arrive at—it was made at roughly the same time and independently by a German mathematician/philosopher called Gottlob Frege and by an American philosopher/meteorologist Charles Sanders Peirce.
