Political Vigilantism In Ghana

Note Description

10pages| Political vigilantism in the African context can be seen as a movement or a group of people who are organized by a political party to provide security services like protecting offices, ballot boxes during elections, and electorates during campaigns usually through violence. One question that immediately comes up when the issue of vigilantism is raised is why the police are not providing these so-called security services for political parties”. According to Les Johnston, vigilantism is a victim or an effect of a collapsed order(Johnston, 1996). Policing in Ghana is highly criticized for ineffectiveness, corruption, bribery and brutality. This mistrust for state security and the electoral commission is a major cause for the rise of vigilante groups in Ghana. Vigilante groups are found in every region and corner of this country. They include NPP invisible force, NDC foot soldiers, Azorka boys, Eastern Mambas, The Hawks, Delta Force, Bamba Bull, Zongo Caucus, Salifu Eleven, Veranda Boys, Bolga Bulls and among others.
